Board of Directors Election

As of Thursday, April 1, 2021, the Board of Directors election has come to a close. We would like to thank all of those who participated in the election process, and congratulate all of those who stepped up to run. Without further ado, here are the results:

Jeff Stubbs – Elected to a three-year term

Jeff is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA-CA) and an ICD.D from the Institute of Corporate Directors, and is currently the COO of Spinnaker Resorts (Ontario) Limited, at Spinnaker he is responsible for the company's $100 million consumer loan portfolio and the operations of the groups finance company.  He also leads the company's risk management, treasury and tax management groups.   He has been a director with the Credit Union since 1996 with a break in service in 2003 and 2004. He brings to the board over 30 years of board and senior financial management experience. Prior to joining Spinnaker, Jeff was working as consultant, providing interim and contract CFO services for 6 years, helping a number of businesses complete financing and sale transactions. Prior to that, he was CFO for Securitas Canada for 7 years and Vice President Finance Admin and Treasurer of Star Data for 5 years.  

Known as a Senior Financial Professional, with a reputation as a leader who can bring his financial skills to all types of management and board issues. His background also involves the management of Human Resources, Legal, Risk, Purchasing Collections, and IT teams as well as the traditional accounting and administration functions.

Jeff has been the Chair of the Board since May 2016. During his time with Comtech Fire, he has been Chair of the Audit Committee, a member of the Nominating Committee and is currently serving as the Chair of the Pension Committee.  He is also currently a Director and Treasurer for Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston  During his career he has also been a director for a number of private, public and Not for Profit companies.   Jeff is a member of the Local Lions club in Alliston, and a curler.  He and his wife, mostly his wife are owners/operators of two Boston Pizza locations.

Joanne Mcdonnell – Elected to a three-year term

Joanne worked at Canada Revenue Agency(CRA) in Kingston for 35 years and retired in August 2009. Joanne worked as a Collection Officer, then as a Collection Enforcement Officer and finishing her last 8 years at CRA as a Trust Examiner. During her career at CRA, Joanne held several positions on the PSAC Union Executive and was very involved with its Health and Safety Committee. Since her retirement, Joanne has stayed actively involved in her community, sitting on various community boards.

Joanne has been a proud Credit Union member, opening her first account at Federal Employees Kingston Credit Union in 1979. Joanne became a Board Member at the Credit Union in 2004, after completing the CUDA Program, and served until 2009.  Joanne returned to the Board in 2010 and has stayed active with the Board.  Joanne has held Board positions of Corporate Secretary, member of the Audit Committee and until the merger with Comtech Fire Credit Union, was Board Chair. Most recently Joanne has served on the Governance and the Nomination committees of CFCU.

Joanne lives in the Kingston area with her family.

Hugh Doherty – Elected to a three-year term

Hugh is a Fire Protection Professional with Toronto Fire Services. With over 36 years service, he progressed through the ranks and attained the level of Platoon Chief in October of 2020. In his serivice at Toronto Fire, he was an elected Executive Officer with the Toronto Professional Fire Fighters Association where he spent time as Vice President, as well as the Chair of Health and Safety where he was Labour Co-Chair of the City's Corporate Health & Safety Committee. Recently, he was Chair of the Human Relations Committee. Hugh, in this role as a Director for Comtech Fire CU, has served on the Governance and Audit Committees for the last two years. He now chairs the newly created HR and Compensation Committee
Currently, Hugh is the Canadian representative on the IAFF's Labour Relations Committee. He also serves on the board of directors for the IAFF's treatment centre, the Center of Excellence, located in Maryland, USA. Hugh is the go-to person in working with firefighters suffering from PTSD/PTSI/OSI, and behavioural health and addiction concerns in the fire service. He is a North American IAFF Peer Support Instructor, training firefighters on recognizing and approaching behavioural health issues. Additionally, he is a R2MR (Road to Mental Readiness) mentor and trainer for firefighters across Canada.

Hugh is married to his wife Sandy and they have two children and two granddaughters Amelia and Mackenzie.

Hugh looks forward to continuing to serve on the Board of Directors for Comtech Fire as we meet the challenges of a post COVID-19 era and continue to serve our membership’s financial needs.

Catherine Fagnan - Elected to a two-year term

Catherine Fagnan is a bilingual lawyer with over 20 years experience. She started her career in tax law and then spent 8 years working at Davis & Company and McCarthy Tétrault LLP.  Since 2012, Catherine has been senior counsel at Lafarge Canada Inc. (LafargeHolcim), one of the biggest construction material suppliers.  Catherine’s areas of expertise range from M&A, corporate and commercial agreements, competition law matters, health & safety, and various types of litigation.  She prides herself on being a compelling & persuasive communicator, building strong relationships and being known for her hands on approach.

Catherine is active in her community by being a mentor to junior associates and a leading member of the “Women in Leadership Lafarge” initiative by helping qualified women thrive within the construction industry.  She also holds the President position of the Grey Standard Condominium Corporation No. 57 (Blue Mountains). Catherine completed an executive MBA at Kellogg-Schulich.
