What It Means To Be A Credit Union Director

The Board of Directors represents the membership in setting and tracking the strategic direction, and monitoring to ensure that appropriate organizational mandates are met. Furthermore the Board of Directors sets policies and governs activities according to the Credit Union Act and Comtech Fire Credit Union’s By-laws.

Board Commitments

The entire Board meets regularly throughout the year. In addition to this, all directors sit on at least one of the Board Committees, Executive, Audit, Governance, and Nominating. Committee meetings occur throughout the year. Directors must be prepared to devote substantial time to meet the requirements of the Board.

Board Openings

Comtech Fire Credit Union’s Board of Directors currently consists of nine to thirteen members from Ontario and Directors are elected for a three-year term.

Board Applications

All applicants will be required to fill out and return the Director Application by a specified date which is determined each year prior to the Annual Meeting.

Board Requirements

In addition to the Director Application, all candidates for Director positions will be screened for:

  • Sound management experience in specific core areas such as business operations, human resources, marketing, legal and/or financial background
  •  Demonstrated skills in strategic and critical thinking
  •  Demonstrated ethical business acumen
  •  Extensive knowledge of credit unions and co-operative principles
  • Leadership and diplomacy skills
  • Concepts and skills in effective communications
  • Overall maturity and cultural fit with Comtech Fire business philosophies
  • Criminal Record check

The Director's Handbook located on FSRA’s website  (www.fsrao.ca) and the Ontario Credit Union's regulatory framework (Acts And By-laws) that can be found at the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario website, particularly the Credit Unions and Caisses Populaires Act, 2020.
